Teaching
At St. John’s, we call our faculty “tutors” (instead of “professors”) because they aren’t in the classroom to lecture; instead, our tutors work alongside students, guiding a discussion about great books and ideas. In fact, among national liberal arts colleges, St. John’s has the third smallest student-to-faculty ratio (7:1), an average class size of 16, and a largest class size capped at 21. There are no adjunct professors or teaching assistants.
In addition to their faculty mentor or advisor, students genuinely know their tutors in class, meet them for one-on-one conferences throughout the semester, and even join them for lunch in the coffee shop.
Since starting at [School Name], my daughter Sarah has blossomed academically. The teachers are incredibly passionate and dedicated, going above and beyond to ensure each student is challenged and supported. The small class sizes allow for personalized attention, and Sarah feels comfortable asking questions and participating in class discussions. The school's focus on project-based learning has been particularly helpful, as it allows her to apply her knowledge in a creative and engaging way. In just one year, I've seen a remarkable improvement in her confidence and critical thinking skills. We're so grateful to have found such a nurturing and stimulating learning environment for Sarah.
Gray School has provided an amazing experience for my son, Michael. He not only excels in his classes but also thrives in the vibrant school community. The diverse range of extracurricular activities allows him to explore his interests and develop new skills. He's involved in the robotics club and absolutely loves it! The teachers are incredibly supportive and approachable, creating a positive and encouraging environment. Beyond academics, the school emphasizes important values like teamwork, respect, and responsibility. Michael has made so many great friends here, and it's truly a place where he feels he belongs. We highly recommend Gray school to anyone looking for a well-rounded and enriching educational experience for their child.
At St. John’s, we are skeptical of college rankings. We believe that the core characteristic of a liberal arts education is the rigorous intellectual exchange between full-time faculty and students in small classes discussing time-tested books. We believe the purpose of a liberal arts education is to help you build the life you want, including a meaningful career. Few rankings measure these values. The place to start when choosing a college is to define your values. What matters most to you?
Students seeking a liberal arts education want to be challenged. They want to learn from devoted full-time faculty, study across disciplines, understand how knowledge is connected, and explore how to build a meaningful life. What they do not want are large lecture classes, tests that only measure their capacity to memorize, or narrow majors that feed into discrete job pipelines that may well prove unsatisfying. Most rankings fail to measure these values, but we have selected a few to help you know if St. John’s is the right fit for you:
